GREAT LENT IN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH
Dear Friends, The forty-day period of Great Lent commemorates the period of fasting that our Lord underwent prior to the beginning of His public ministry. It is sacred period of fasting and prayer that affords Orthodox Christians the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the Passion of Christ Which was preceded by the final days of His ministry on earth. It is a period of reflection when our Orthodox Church affords us the opportunity of self-examination and a turning inward to examine our conscience,to confess our sins, and to rise to a more spiritual level of existence than that of our usual life in the world. This spiritual discipline can help us to experience the true meaning ofour life on earth which is one of inner peace and spiritual joy that the world often deprives us of,but one which the Holy Spirit can make real for us,if we “commit ourselves and another and our whole life to Christ our God”Everyone of us can come to this state of inner joy, provided we are sincere and ernest in our spiritual quest. The Psalmist urges us strongly,” Taste and see that the Lord is good!” this is what makes our celebration of Easter truly meaningful and joyful.
