Rev. Dr. Peter G. Rizos, Protopresbyter

Born and educated in Lowell, Massachusetts, the Rev. Dr. Peter G. Rizos was graduated from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (1961, B.A. in Theology). He pursued graduate studies at Boston University School of Theology; Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Chicago Theological Seminary. He received a Ph.D. in Human Learning and Religious Development from the Graduate School of Boston University (1975). His doctoral thesis is entitled, “Biblical and Theological Norms for Concern Groups in the Church.”

Ordained to the Diaconate and the Priesthood in 1966, he was assigned as pastor of the St. Demetrios Church in Fall River, Massachusetts. Fr. Rizos served as Associate Pastor and Director of Religious Education at the Holy Trinity Church in Lowell (1972-1984). While at the Holy Trinity Church he was responsible for the GOYA and served as Sunday School Director. He served as interim pastor for a number of years after that time, in the absence of a regular pastor of the parish. Fr. Rizos also served as adjunct instructor of Religious Education at the Holy Cross School of Theology (1980-1984). He worked for the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Archdiocese (1978-1981) with a focus on teacher training.

Fr. Rizos is a retired teacher of Latin, Modern Greek, and History in the Lyceum of Lowell High School (1971-2004), where he developed a four-year curriculum of Honors Greek. He has also taught Psychology, Sociology, and Group Dynamics at Northern Essex Community College in the evening division. He has served as interim pastor for various parishes in the Boston Metropolis (1984-1994). Fr. Rizos served as pastor of the St. Nicholas Church in Manchester, New Hampshire (1997-2004). In March of 2004 Metropolitan Methodios assigned him as pastor of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Church in Woburn, which he served for nine (9) years, until his new assignment at the St. George Church in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Fr. Rizos is married to Presbytera Alexandra (Manousos), also of Lowell. They have two children, Dr. Demetrius, an internist and nephrologist, and Aris Hatch, a venture capitalist, and two grandchildren, Nicholas Rizos and Effie Hatch.
