Parish Services

General Services

Joining Our Parish – Those of the Orthodox Faith interested in joining our parish are welcome to attend services and contact us about becoming a parish member.

Eucharist – Holy Communion, the principal sacrament mystery of the Orthodox Church, is not so much a text to be studied, but rather an experience of communion with the Living God in which prayer, music, gestures, the material creation, art and architecture come into full orchestration. The Eucharist is a celebration of faith which touches not only the mind but also the emotions and the senses.

Baptism – The Sacrament of Baptism incorporates us into the Church, the Body of Christ, and is our introduction to the life of the Holy Trinity. Water is a natural symbol of cleansing and newness of life.

Please contact us well in advance if you are planning a baptism.

Marriage – God is active in our lives. It is He who joins a man and a woman in a relationship of mutual love. The Sacrament of Marriage bears witness to His action. Through this Sacrament, a man and a woman are publicly joined as husband and wife. They enter into a new relationship with each other, God, and the Church.

Please contact us well in advance if you are planning a wedding.

Funerals – It is traditional for Greek Orthodox to say to the bereaved, ‘May you have an abundant life’, and ‘May their memory be eternal’. There is usually an open casket at the ceremony. Traditionally, when Greek Orthodox view the body, they bow in front of the casket and kiss an icon or cross placed on the chest of the deceased. At the graveside, there is a prayer ceremony and each person present places one flower on the casket. A memorial service is held on the Sunday closest to the 40th day after the death.

Parish members are ask contact us as soon as possible to arrange accommodations for funerals.

Groups of St. George Greek Orthodox Church

Ladies Philoptochos – for women of all ages. The Philoptochos provides comfort and companionship for the less fortunate and supports our church in all its endeavors. This group works not only for the local parish, but for many philanthropic projects at the Diocesan and Archdiocesan level as well. While sponsoring social functions, church related activities, and philanthropic fund raisers, the women form lasting friendships. For more information contact us.

Church School – for children 4 years old and up. This is the primary place where our children learn about our faith and the symbols and traditions of Orthodoxy. For more information contact us.Choir – for men and women 13 and older. The Book of Psalms in the Old Testament urges us to glorify the Lord by lifting up our voices in praise to Him. The choir affords an opportunity to assist as well as participate in the Divine Liturgy through the varied and beautiful Byzantine responses and hymns. The role of our choir represents an important contribution to our spiritual life. Hymns are sung in English and Greek and new members are always welcome. For more information contact us.

Fellowship Hour – Each Sunday after the Divine Liturgy, there is a fellowship hour when all are invited to the church hall for coffee and snacks and to enjoy the conviviality of meeting old and new friends. For more information contact us.

Volunteers – The concept of stewardship is one which encourages all to offer not only financial gifts to the church, but the gift of time, talent and energy. There are many opportunities to be of service and many ways of serving. The idea of volunteerism is one of offering rather than waiting to be asked. The rewards are great.
